Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a simple, self-sustaining ecosystem composed of fish, bacteria and plants that allow you to grow healthy, nutritious food in your own backyard without a huge investment of time. The Introduction to Aquaponics Certificate Course will show you the way.

By studying this course, you will:
  • Become familiar with the difference between aquaculture, hydroponics and aquaponics
  • Understand the importance of water quality within an aquaponics system.
  • Learn about various aquaponics systems that meets differing requirements
  • Know how to keep fish and vegetables alive and healthy

Cost : $400

Students are required to build a small scale system.  Course fee does not include materials

Programme Description:

This ten (10) week course is an introduction to the concept of aquaponics. This course will cover fish and plant selection, proper site selection, and the best management practices when operating an aquaponics system.

Programme Goal/Objectives:

At the end of this course students should be able to construct a small-scale aquaponics system. They should also be knowledgeable about how the system works using the nitrogen cycle, what basic system designs are best suited for a backyard garden, and how to manage a small system for daily operation.

Upon completion students will be able to:

  • Describe various types of aquaponics systems
  • Describe the function of the main biological components
  • Design a small aquaponic garden system
  • Discuss proper fish waste disposal techniques
