At the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute, your first year is more than just lectures and labs — it’s about planting the seeds for personal growth, academic success, and a lifelong commitment to sustainability and innovation. The First-Year Immersion Program is designed to support students as they transition into tertiary life, connect with their peers and faculty, and build a strong foundation for success in agriculture, marine science, and beyond.

 

Program Goals


The First-Year Immersion Program aims to:

  • Ease the transition from high school to BAMSI’s academic environment
  • Build a sense of belonging and community
  • Introduce students to the mission and values of BAMSI
  • Foster student success through academic skill-building and mentorship
  • Cultivate leadership, wellness, and professional readiness

 

Student Outcomes


By the end of the First-Year Immersion Program, students will:
 
  • Demonstrate confidence in navigating academic and campus life
  • Understand BAMSI’s institutional vision and their role in national development
  • Build lasting peer and faculty relationships
  • Engage actively in academic and community life
  • Be empowered to make healthy, informed decisions

 

Who Participates?

All incoming first-time, full-time students are automatically enrolled in the First-Year Immersion Program. Participation is mandatory for new students to ensure a successful and supported transition.


Core Program Components


 

Orientation Week: “BAMSI Begins”

  • An engaging welcome experience including:
  • Campus tours and meet-the-faculty sessions
  • Program overviews and registration support
  • Workshops on time management, study skills, and academic integrity
  • Social mixers and community-building events

 

FYI Seminar Series: “Rooted & Ready”

A semester-long seminar for all first-year students featuring:

  • Weekly Student Success  discussions on student life, leadership, and identity
  • Introduction to BAMSI’s core themes: food security, climate resilience, marine conservation, and entreprenuership 
  • Guest speakers from community, industry and government
  • MENtor and InspHER sessions
  • Journaling, reflection, and peer dialogue

 

Advising & Mentorship

Each student is paired with:

  • An academic advisor to support course planning and career goals
  • A peer mentor (senior student or ambassador) for informal guidance and connection

 

Community Engagement & Experiential Learning

  • Group volunteer day in a local farm, fisheries station, or conservation site
  • Bahamian agriculture & marine heritage tours
  • Sustainability challenge projects and innovation hackathons

 

Wellness & Personal Growth

  • Access to mental health and counseling services
  • Mindfulness, fitness, and life skills workshops
  • Special sessions on navigating island life as a tertiary student
